Module summary

This module allows students to explore the use of specialist imaging in imaging of all body systems and the skills and role of the radiographer in each area.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide the knowledge base and underpinning theory for imaging the body systems. Students will consider safe the use of contrast agents and different imaging pathways used to demonstrate anatomy, pathology and physiology. They will evaluate the suitability of each modality in relation to the body system in question.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Discuss the theoretical knowledge and principles of examinations requiring the use of contrast agents and justify the use of contrast agents and identify safety implications
2. Discuss the concepts which support safe and effective diagnostic imaging techniques;
3. Understand how the basic principles of pharmacology, underpin the use and action of drugs;
4. Evaluate the use of interpersonal skills with respect to variety of people and situations;
5. Discuss diagnostic pathways, cultural perspectives & the patient management;
6. Understand how imaging is used to examine body systems.
7. Identify appropriate imaging pathways for specific pathologies
8. Discuss the role of communication in specialist imaging areas

Skills outcomes

This module provides the theoretical principles of diagnostic radiographic technique for imaging of the body systems and will act as a foundation for year 3.

The knowledge gained in this module will be further developed as the student moves through each year of study. The knowledge gained in this module will be further integrated into practice during clinical practice.

Private study

Time is allocated in the module hours for writing up and revising notes, visiting relevant websites, accessing electronic literature and library based study, and preparing for assessments.

Students will use the time for background research and reading in preparatrion for the poster presentation and to seek tutorial time with the module lead to discuss any areas which need clarification.
